Toyota Prius Hybrid Battery Replacement
The Toyota Prius is the most common hybrid vehicle on BC roads, and the battery replacement we perform most frequently in Kelowna. All three Prius generations use a Panasonic NiMH pack in a 28-module configuration — a mature, proven architecture that typically delivers 200,000–350,000 km of life in mild climates like the Okanagan. Failure almost always begins with one or two weak modules creating a cell imbalance, which is what triggers the P0A80 fault code. Because we stock Prius packs for all three generations, same-day service is usually available.

Warning Signs — Toyota Prius Battery Failing
- Red triangle warning light on the dashboard
- VSC and check engine lights illuminated together
- Sudden and significant drop in fuel economy (e.g. 4.5 L/100km → 7+ L/100km)
- Vehicle enters limp mode — engine runs constantly without battery assist
- Battery charge gauge swings erratically or reads full then empty
- Car hesitates or struggles on hills that it previously handled easily

Toyota Prius — Service Notes
Prius battery access is straightforward — the pack sits under the rear seat and bench. Most replacements are completed on-site in 1.5–2 hours. Gen 1 packs can sometimes be reconditioned if the module imbalance is caught early; Gen 2 and Gen 3 failures are more typically a full pack replacement.

Toyota Prius Battery — Common Questions
Specific to this vehicle. Call us for anything not covered here.
P0A80 — 'Replace Hybrid Battery Pack' — is Toyota's most common hybrid fault code and almost always means one or more battery modules have degraded below acceptable voltage thresholds. It does not necessarily mean every cell has failed. We test each of the 28 modules individually to confirm the extent of damage before recommending a full replacement.
Reconditioning — cycling the pack to equalize module voltages — can work on early-stage Gen 1 failures where only one or two modules are slightly weak. However, once P0A80 is stored and the vehicle enters limp mode, reconditioning rarely provides more than a few months of reliable operation. We'll tell you honestly which option makes sense for your specific pack.
Most Prius battery replacements take 1.5 to 2 hours from start to finish, including the post-install system check and road test. We carry stock for all three Prius generations, so there's no wait for parts.
Yes. A healthy hybrid battery is what allows the Prius to achieve its rated fuel economy. Once the pack is replaced and the hybrid system is recalibrated, most customers see fuel economy return to normal or better than they remember — particularly if the battery had been degrading slowly for months or years before failure.
Almost always, yes — especially compared to buying a replacement vehicle. A well-maintained Prius engine routinely reaches 400,000+ km. At our pricing ($1,099), a battery replacement is often less than two months of car payments on a new vehicle. We can inspect the rest of the drivetrain and give you an honest assessment before you commit.
