GM's Two-Mode Hybrid integrates two electric motors directly into the automatic transmission rather than alongside it (as in Toyota's system). This design allows the hybrid system to be more efficient at both low-speed city driving (Mode 1) and higher-speed highway driving (Mode 2). When the battery fails, the 'Service Hybrid System' warning typically appears.
We recommend against towing with an active hybrid system fault. The battery management system limits vehicle operation when a fault is detected, and towing under these conditions can place additional stress on the engine and remaining drivetrain components. Service the battery first, then resume towing.
